Veggie Brats with Guacamole and Hummus

If you don’t eat meat, a holiday weekend where everyone cooks out is not always a lot of fun. I can’t tell you how many cookouts I’ve been to and subsisted on potato chips and brownies, with maybe some pasta salad.
These days, veggie options are much more readily available. They’re also so good that even meat-eaters can enjoy them. For things like brats and sausages, it’s pretty easy to find a satisfying substitute. And when you top it with guacamole and hummus, it’s more than just satisfying —it’s actually really good.
I tried two versions of these, one with salsa and one with hummus, fully expecting the salsa version to win out. But there is something about the creamy hummus and chunky guacamole that just hits right for me. Feel free to try either or both. Either way, you win.

  • 4 vegetarian brats
  • 4 hot dog buns
  • 1/2 cup guacamole
  • 1/2 cup hummus
  • Fresh sliced jalapeños optional


  • Preheat a grill to medium high heat.
  • Grill the brats until done to your liking and put on buns.
  • Top with the guacamole, hummus, and jalapeños, if using.
  • Serve immediately.
